  • The life stages and key characteristics in the physical, intellectual, emotional and social (PIES) development classifications and the different factors that can affect an individual’s growth and development.

  • Students will learn how to interpret physiological and lifestyle indicators and what they mean for a person’s state of health. They will also study how this information is used to recommend appropriate actions for improving a person’s health and wellbeing.

Year 13 – Unit 3- External assessment 

Knowledge focus

This unit introduces students to health, safety and security in health and social care. They will acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to allow them to maintain a safe working environment for themselves and their colleagues and individuals who require care and support. Students will learn how legislation, policies and procedures work to reduce risks in health and social care and the consequences of not following them. They will also learn how to respond to different incidents and emergencies within health and social care settings 

Key skills

  • Learning will be context-based where learners will be expected to demonstrate their understanding through answering questions that require skills of analysis and evaluation in particular contexts.  
  • Learners will be required to analyse situations then make recommendations, and justify, the correct course of action to take for a practitioner, an individual who require care and support or the service provider.

Students will learn about the arrangement of body systems and the structure and function of the component parts. They will then learn about key processes within each body system, that enable them to function properly. Students will then explore conditions affecting these systems, specifically learning about the biological basis, monitoring, treatment and impact on lifestyle and independence.

Knowledge focus

Students will learn the principles and values that underpin a person-centred approach to care and the practical tools that can be used to develop care plans for individuals. They will explore how to communicate in health and social care, how to build relationships and the barriers that need to be overcome to achieve person-centred care. Students will learn how to write outline care plans to suit individuals, using person-centred approaches and develop their reflective practice skills

Students will develop an understanding of learning disabilities and consider issues involved in providing support for people with a learning disability and their family. They will explore the areas of inclusion, human rights, advocacy, empowerment and active participation and gain an understanding of the term ’learning disability’ by looking at a range of different types and possible causes.
